The Truth About Vanish Plate Covers: What No One Tells You Before You Buy

Vanish  plate covers have exploded in popularity, but with that growth has come a flood of misinformation, misleading marketing, and flat-out lies. If you’ve been researching blackout plate covers, odds are you’ve run into claims that sound too good to be true. That’s because they are.

At Vusi Studios, we actually design and build our own systems, so we know what’s real, what’s possible, and what’s marketing fluff. This post is here to set the record straight.

No, They're Not “Fully Clear” When Off

Nearly every brand online claims their LCD plate covers are “completely clear” when powered off. That’s false.

Because LCDs use polarizers and liquid crystals, the majority of light is always blocked, meaning there will always be some level of tint. Even at the highest quality (which we’ve achieved), the maximum light transmission is around 35%. Not 83%, not 90%. That’s simply not how LCD tech works.

They Are Not All the Same Through Sunglasses

Another common lie: “Ours is fully visible through sunglasses.”

Most LCD screens black out or distort when viewed through polarized lenses, like common sunglasses, due to how polarization interacts with the screen layers. The only way to mitigate this is through advanced coatings.

Only Vusi Studios plates use a proprietary Nano coating that allows visibility even through polarized sunglasses. Everyone else? It'll be fully blacked out if someone was looking at it with sunglasses.

You Can’t Leave Them On in the Sun

Just like any LCD screen, phone, tablet, or monitor, if you leave it powered on under direct sunlight for extended periods, it will burn in.

Yes, that means if you leave your blackout plate turned on and your car is parked under the sun, it will permanently damage the screen. Anyone telling you to “just leave it on” clearly has no clue how LCDs work. When parked, leave the screen clear. Always.

They're Not Made with PDLC

Here’s a big one. A lot of drop-shipped brands claim their blackout plates use PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal).

They don’t. And they never did.

PDLC is an entirely different technology typically used in smart glass. It requires constant voltage to stay clear, is prone to failure when wet, and doesn't block visibility cleanly from all angles. The reality is: PDLC does not work for license plates.

LCD is the only viable method, but only if it’s engineered properly. Most brands resell imported screens and don’t even know what material they’re working with.

They Don’t Block IR Cameras

Some brands go as far as to say their plates block all types of camera flashes.

This is 100% false.

LCD screens do not have the ability to block infrared light. They are not night vision–proof. If anyone is claiming otherwise, they either don’t understand the product or are outright lying to make sales.

Dropshippers Don’t Know What They’re Selling

Let’s be blunt: If someone didn’t design the product, they can’t support it, fix it, or even explain how it works.

All other brands selling blackout plates are dropshippers, buying from Alibaba, slapping a logo on the box, and copying tech specs they don’t understand. That’s why their claims don’t line up with reality.

We’ve torn their units down. We’ve tested them all and they are identical to each other. All purchased from the same source.

Know What You’re Buying

At Vusi Studios, we built the Vanish Plate from scratch. That means we understand its capabilities, limitations, and the science behind it. We’ll never promise you magic. We’ll give you the truth, and the best-performing LCD plate cover on the market, backed by real engineering.

If you want the real thing, trust the team that actually made it.

Don’t run. Vanish.
